Hope Mennonite Church Mosaic
Throughout fall 2010 and fall 2011, Hope did a 24-part series on the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective. The Worship Commission decided that the image of a mosaic best represented the beautiful layering of life testimonies, doctrinal convictions, and faith in Jesus which is the Hope Mennonite Church story. We are a uniquely formed, diverse people. But together we are united in faith and love of God!
When you walk through the church doors your eyes may first be drawn to our mosaic of faith which hangs on the far wall. It is a vision of the kingdom of God where calf and lion rest together (Isaiah 11:6). We seek to be signs of the kingdom of God, which is justice, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Therefore, our version of the “peaceable kingdom” image became a fitting way to represent the unitive conviction of our mosaic.
The mosaic was completed over several weeks under the artistic direction of Joanna Pinkerton. Though much of the work was completed “in studio,” pieces of the mosaic were placed during worship throughout the first six weeks of the series.
- Week One – Children placed the first pieces
- Week Two – All were invited to place a piece during the offeratory
- Week Three – Men began outlining the mosaic
- Week Four – Women placed fruit on the vines
- Week Five – Those who did not grow up Mennonite added to the mosaic
- Week Six – Cradle Mennonites placed their pieces
